Asbestos Roofing on Buildings Built Before 1990

Asbestos cement sheeting was used widely on roofs from the early 1900s because it was strong, cheap and fire resistant. Australia banned the manufacture, use, reuse, import, transport, storage and sale of asbestos at the end of 2003, but commercial and industrial buildings constructed before 1990 commonly still carry asbestos roofing.

Asbestos roofing is stable while it stays intact and dangerous once it is disturbed. Cutting, drilling, impact, storm damage and age related degradation all release fibres, and inhaled fibres cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Walking on a brittle sheet can be enough.
